A Brief Introduction...

One way to describe Kobrah's style and music is "creativity defined". The Hip Hop artist from Pittsburgh, PA. utilizes his creativity without compromise, unafraid to touch on any array of concepts and ideas. Kobrah also possess the ability to produce his own work, ranging from writing his own songs, to making the beats, and even the graphic design work. With such a diverse background, his followers are excited to see how far this young man's talents can take him.

Kobrah's seperates himself from the competition through his "simple-yet-complex" lyrical abilities as well as his creativity in terms of musical approach. When asked about his creativity, he states:

"I am a firm believer that you cannot survive on mere talent and skills alone. These are merely tools in an artist's arsenal and you have to be able to use those tools in many different ways in order to make your mark in the music industry. The more creative and original you are then the longer that you'll last."

Kobrah pulls his influence from his surroundings. Many of his creative works have been pulled from personal experiences, as well as from interactions with his peers. Many of these creative works have also been created from the depths of his imagination.

Living in the "city of steel" has provided advantages and disadvantages, which Kobrah exploits to the fullest of his abilities. The world is watching and waiting, and this young man promises to deliver more than what is expected of him. With the business-saavy of a prestigious mogul, the confidence and lyrical ability of a seasoned veteran performer, and enough creativity to fill a bottomless pit, Kobrah sets his sights high to make the world aware of a Pittsburgh emcee's TRUE potential. And after being nominated in award shows for consecutive years without releasing a single project, he is well on his way!

Kobrah's Personal Life...

Kobrah was born Steven Lamar Smith III on May 17th, 1987 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. His parents, Jameeda Jones and Steven Smith, Jr. seperated immediately prior to his birth. Growing up primarily in a single-parent home Kobrah obtained his love of music from his mother, whom was an aspiring singer. Though life provided it's troubles for them, his mother did everything within her power to keep him away from the street life. Over the span of Kobrah's life, one can assume that she succeeded in doing just that!

At an early age Kobrah attended A. Leo WIld kindergarten, located in Pittsburgh's Hill District. After a brief stint there the faculty and staff decided to move him up to the first grade at Robert Lee Vann Elementary school, also located on the Hill District. For the next two and a half years, Steve garnered numerous academic accolades, including the coveted Vann's V.I.P, rewarded to the school's most outstanding students. After a few years living on the Hill District, Kobrah's family relocates to Homewood, where he attended the school previously known as Crescent Elementary School. His family then moved to Rankin, where he attended school in the Woodland Hills School District for the duration of his school years. While at Woodland Hills, he participated in numerous school activites, including Varsity Football, Varsity Track & Field, Student Government and the Art Club.

After graduation in June of 2005, Kobrah then went on to pursue his college degree in Graphic Design at California University of Pennsylvania. He would soon leave due to financial circumstances and go on to attent the Community College of Allegheny County, where he studied for his Associate's Degree in Business Management. While attending these institutions he received numerous accolades, including The National Dean's List his freshman year of college at CalU.

While Steven appears to his peers as "a unique man in his own right", one thing that everyone knows about him is that he is very self-kept. There are moments where his friends and family would forget that he is present in their home because of how quiet he is. When it is time for him to assume the role of "Kobrah", that tale is a different story. He is as direct, aggressive and confident as any seasoned emcee before him.

Behind the Music...

Before we knew Steve as "Kobrah", he underwent many changes in name, character, and style. He has been musically involved since the fourth grade. His mother recognized his musical potential when he used his toys (and video games) to create music. Anytime she entered the room, he was banging on his toy pool set as if it were a pair of drums. He created music by combinating various sound effects in the "options" menus of video games. However his mother truly noticed his musical potential one day at their home on Pittsburgh's Hill District. While talking with family and friends, his mother noticed Kobrah sitting at the table alone moving her crystal napkin holder around, moving the refracting light around on the table. This puzzled everyone, even his mother, but after a few short minutes of watching him she took notice that he was moving the light around in a set pattern. She connected the dots that he was creating music in his head and he was using the light to create it. That moment his mother knew that music would always have affiliation in his life regardless of what career he chose to pursue.

Throughout his years his mother enrolled him in musical activities such as chorus. At the age of 15 he wrote his first verse. When his peers heard the finished product they recoginzed his potential once he improved his skills. in the 10th grade his English teacher learned of his lyrical ability and asked that he, along with friends Devon (Lyric-A-Capella) and Chad to write a song portraying the events of a book they read by a famous author. The song received rave reviews across the school and, from that day on, Kobrah earned a following. For the days, months, and years that followed, recognition of Kobrah's skills grew until virtually every student (and teacher) took notice. With the growing recognition came minor hostility from other rappers in the school, leading to cafeteria-held verse battles in which students even skipped class to witness. For a period of two years Kobrah went undefeated. Then in 9th grade he received his first loss in the form of a two-on-one battle, which he was unprepared for. Within two weeks, he would battle the two individuals again and defeat both of them. To his classmates amazement, he ended the battle within eight bars (that is half of a verse!). Since that day he has not battled, nor has anyone attempted to battle him. With this experience he took on a new level of humbleness and humility, understanding that there are always better artists, with some closer than one would assume.

His junior year of high school, he joined the group Hood Statuz (formerly known as Kash 5 Krew), which consisted originally of Kobrah, and his cousins James "Jay-M" Martin and Tristian "TK Aura" Smith. The trio would achieve moderate success, soon after including band mate Marquis "Young Kee" White. Shortly after they would meet Qua-Z-Modo and Sasha (Shy, Miztique) of Kolab Music Productions. They were introduced via Jay-M and they asked for an auditioning session to determine if they were worthy candidates as additions to their label. While both delivered amazing verses, it was Kobrah who initially stood out to them, in which they offered to work with him on a solo basis. Kobrah refused, stating that if the entire group was not acquired then he would sign with them. After brief negotiations, Kolab and Hood Statuz reached working terms without a contractual agreement, and shortly after acquired three more members, including Darren "Jizzle" Jones and Brandon "B-Geniu$" Clayton. As time goes on the group is trimmed to five people: Kobrah, Jay-M, TK Aura, Young Kee, and B-Geniu$. While with the label, Kobrah began beatmaking using Qua-Z-Modo's drum machine.

After two years of working together, as well as irreconcilable differences, Kolab Music Productions and Hood Statuz would cease operations. After the seperation from the label, they were introduced to Duane Moore and POJ, prior manager and producer of Pittsburgh's phenom group "Tha Govament". Upon hearing the group Duane immediately knew that this group was special and had a plan mapped out for the group immedately. However the choice to sign him on as a manager was a split decision between the members of Hood Statuz, with Kobrah and Young Kee ready to sign, Jay-M and TK against it, and B-Geniu$ remaining neutral. Soon after tensions would mount within the group and, ultimately, lead to the dismantling of Hood Statuz as a group. With Kobrah remaining, Duane resumed managerial duties of his musical career as a solo.

Now Kobrah plans to show the world his musical abilites. The city of Pittsburgh is in for the ride of their lives...
